My interest in safety started with a moment I’ll never forget. A supervisor once told me he hired us for our backs and when those gave out, he’d replace us. That moment made me realize that if I didn’t take my own safety seriously, no one else would. From then on, I committed to changing that mindset for myself, my colleagues, and the organizations I serve today.

Safety has never just been about compliance for me. I grew up in a neighborhood where everyone looked out for each other, and I carried that lesson into safety. Regulations matter, but they’re only tools. Real safety work is about people building trust, relationships, and a culture where everyone is safe. I often say that if a professional knows every regulation but can’t connect with people, that knowledge is useless.

That perspective has guided my work in the risk and insurance industry today. Sitting with owners, finance leaders, and operations executives has taught me that good risk management isn’t about having all the answers. Good risk management is about collaboration. By listening and bringing people together, I’ve built strategies that no one could shape alone.

I’ve shared this message on global stages with the Risk & Insurance Management Society (RIMS), led workshops for ASSUREX Global, participated in panel discussions for INSURANCE JOURNAL and sparked conversations in local chapters and industry forums. Whether to a large audience or a small group, my goal is the same: to make risk management real, human, and actionable.
